Introducing the Railroads of Cincinnati Division 7. Cincinnati Division 7, of the NMRA Mid Central Region, will be featuring limited edition freight cars showcasing proto-freelanced railroads within Cincinnati Division 7.

The first to be introduced is John Miller’s Kanawha & Lake Erie RR. The original K&LE ran from Charleston, WV north to Monongah, WV and remained a valuable connection to the coal fields and other industries. It continued north from Monongah to Pittsburgh and Erie, PA. By 1965 the K&LE ran from St Louis eastward to Monongah, WV. In 1976, when Conrail was created, K&LE formed a partnership with the P&LE railroad, which did not merge with Conrail (like the other NYC lines did).

We used Accurail’s 5100 Series 50' Insulated, Riveted, Steel Boxcar with Plug Door for this K&LE project. These cars were used in the 1950’s and 60’s. This limited-edition K&LE car is offered in two road numbers: 5224 and 5359. Each have a build date of July 1958 (7-58). For orders of three or more cars, decal sets are included free-of-charge for you to renumber the cars into as many as twelve (12) different road numbers.

Using Accurail’s 2200 Series ACF 2-Bay Covered Hopper as the basis, we are offering it in a Norfolk & Western repaint scheme. These cars are N&W class HC-46 and are from an original batch of fifty built by in 1966 by ACF with the Round Herald paint scheme. Subsequently some cars went through a general maintenance program and were repainted in the block N&W livery. Photos were found showing at least three of these cars (road numbers 170753, 170768 and 170794) were reweighed at some later date because that area is “patched out” on the car with the new data displayed. Those same photos place these three cars as being in service in 1992 and 2004. It is these three, highly unique, road numbers that Cincinnati Division 7 is now offering for sale as limited edition kits.

In 1923, the Miami Valley Railroad, a subsidiary of the Virginian & Ohio, ordered 50 boxcars from American Car and Foundry. These cars had an inside length of 36' 5", an inside height of 8' 4", an inside width of 8' 6", and a capacity of 2580 cubic feet. They featured Hutchinson steel roofs, 7/7 inverted rib steel ends, seven-foot wooden doors, Andrews trucks, and K-style air brakes. The cars were delivered with MVR reporting marks.

The V&O also ordered 34 of these cars, which were delivered in V&O livery and carried V&O reporting marks. Some of these cars were rebuilt at the West Carrollton shops in July, 1940 in the buildup to World War II. The last of these cars continued in service until late 1952. V&O Tool Car No. 435 was rebuilt at West Carrollton in December, 1946. It continued in service on the V&O into the late 1960s.

Manufactured in the USA by Accurail, these Limited Edition HO Scale Car Kits were designed by W. Allen McClelland and produced with his permission by Cincinnati Division 7, Mid Central Region, NMRA, Inc.
